Medium Carbon Steels are similar to low carbon steel except that the carbon ranges from 0.30 to 0.60% & the manganese from 0.50 to 1.65%. Increasing the carbon content is approximately 0.5% with an accompanying increase in manganese allows medium carbon steels to be used in the quenched & tempered conditions. This steels are of particular importance because of unique combination of strength & toughness after heat treat treatment.

Steel Grade 6150

Steel Grade 6150 is a fine grained, highly abrasion resistant carbon-chromium alloy steel. Very good shock resistance and toughness are also key properties of this alloy in the heat treated condition.
Commonly employed in heavily stressed machinery parts including shafts, gears, pinions and also in hand tool components.

This alloy, while difficult to weld, has been successfully joined with all of the common methods. Part preheating and post weld stress relieving are essential components of a successful procedure.

Harden at 1600 F and oil quench. Temper for desired properties. Normalizing can be accomplished by heating to 1650 F followed by air cooling. Typical Brinell hardness – 260.

Low carbon steel strips.

Mild steel, also called plain-carbon steel, is the most common form of steel because its price is relatively low while it provides material properties that are acceptable for many applications, more so than iron. Low carbon steel contains approximately 0.05–0.3% carbon[1] and mild steel contains 0.3–0.6% carbon; making it malleable and ductile. Mild steel has a relatively low tensile strength, but it is cheap and malleable; surface hardness can be increased through carburizing.

Low carbon steels suffer from yield-point runout where the material has two yield points. The first yield point (or upper yield point) is higher than the second and the yield drops dramatically after the upper yield point. Low carbon steels contain less carbon than other steels and are easier to cold-form, making them easier to handle.

Special Temper Cold Rolled Steel Strips.

These are basically as rolled hard steel strip. To achieve a desired hardness, an annealed material of suitable thickness is taken and rolled down to the required thickness, to achieve that required hardness. After rolling, the material is pinch passed and final annealing is not required. To choose the correct thickness (for reduction to the desired thickness) is a matter of expertise.
Grades: This strip is available in low, medium & high carbon grades.

Applications: It is suitable for components where formability is limited. It saves the extra annealing cost. The strip is directly punched & formed and if required sent for heat treatment.
