Steel Properties.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. Carbon is the primary alloying element, and its content in the steel is between 0.002% and 2.1% by weight. Additional elements are also present in steel: manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and traces of oxygen, nitrogen and aluminum. Alloying elements intentionally added to modify the characteristics of steel include: manganese, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, boron, titanium, vanadium and niobium.[1]
Carbon and other elements act as a hardening agent, preventing dislocations in the iron atom crystal lattice from sliding past one another. Varying the amount of alloying elements and the form of their presence in the steel (solute elements, precipitated phase) controls qualities such as the hardness, ductility, and tensile strength of the resulting steel. Steel with increased carbon content can be made harder and stronger than iron, but such steel is also less ductile than iron.

Steep hike in steel prices

Leading domestic steel makers SAIL, Essar Steel, Jindal Steel and Power and JSW Steel have raised prices by up to Rs 2,500 per tonne for this month due to sharp increase in input costs.

The sharp fall of rupee against other currencies, mainly the US dollar, rise in oil prices and transportation costs are some of the major reason for the hike, JSPL’s Deputy Managing Director and CEO Steel Business V R Sharma told PTI.

The prices have gone up by 4-5%.

“Everybody was bleeding, prices had rock bottomed in last 3 months. Now the demand is picking up and market can absorb the price hike,” he added.

Other leading steel makers like Tata Steel and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam are also in the process of increasing the prices, industry sources said. It could not be verified independently.

Among the steel majors, the steepest hike has been from JSPL which has raised the price of steel plates by about Rs 2,500 per tonne. The company also increased prices of wire rod and rebars by about Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,500 per tonne.
